Ani DiFranco’s “Righteous Babe Radio” features “Letters from an American” daily newsletter

Righteous Babe Radio, the 24-hour online radio station from singer/songwriter/feminist/activist author Ani DiFranco, has now incorporated Letters From An American, the daily newsletter from Heather Cox Richardson. DiFranco reads the daily news brief every day, which broadcasts at 6pm, 11pm and 8am CT the following day.  Richardson, a professor of American History, believes that you can’t get a grip on today’s politics without an outline of America’s Constitution, laws, the economy, and social customs. Her newsletter explores what it means, and what it has meant, to be an American. DiFranco claims, “I find her so informative and articulate and she has been a great resource for me through this harrowing political time.” For more information and to listen, go to www.righteousbabe.com.

Currently Righteous Babe Radio offers a vibrant schedule of live music, bootlegs, book excerpts, talks, interviews and other spoken word projects from DiFranco, Righteous Babe artists and many more.  Previously unreleased shows are featured throughout the week, and new conversations with luminaries are presented as well. “Woody’s Voice” is a recurring feature which will explore struggle and overcoming issues together, and you’ll be hearing from Woody Guthrie, artists who collaborated with his words, and some new music that continues Woody’s message. Additional content continues to be added.

A schedule for the Righteous Babe Radio for this week follows. Music from Ani DiFranco, various Righteous Babe Records’ artists and others play throughout the day as well.

This collaboration is produced by Zoe Boekbinder and Ani DiFranco and features incarcerated writers and musicians from New Folsom prison in Folsom, CA. This project began in 2010 when Boekbinder volunteered in New Folsom, playing concerts and teaching workshops in songwriting.  Proceeds from the project go to Southern Center for Human Rights. As always with Righteous Babe, the spirit of fierce independence continues with Righteous Babe Radio. Although she had originally been approached years before to host her own radio show, DiFranco passed with her firm belief of self-sufficiency intact. Now, with folks socially distanced and isolated, it seemed like the best time for DiFranco to impart her dream of community via the internet airways.  About RBR Radio DiFranco visualizes, “Sharing the music of my brilliant friends and collaborators… nerding out on revered influences… amplifying the sounds and words of my political and cultural inspirations. (In my fantasy, this is all magically at my fingertips!) I love national public radio, I love community radio, I love college radio. When I’ve lived in different cities, at different times in my life, I’ve kept company with different stations and those stations have felt like integral parts of my experience of each city. Living [not super commercial] radio has been a companion to me my whole life. I shudder to think where our “informed electorate” would be without NPR. I’ve never been lonely in New Orleans thanks to OZ. In the aftermath of Katrina, even local talk radio became an essential community bulletin and information lifeline.”
