NASHVILLE, TN – In tandem with new tour dates and a hometown album release show, celebrated independent artist Skylar Gudasz has released the video for her new uplifting song “Truck”, which appears on her forthcoming album COUNTRY (out August 9th on Perseids Records). On COUNTRY, Gudasz looks at country not as a genre, but as the literal and figurative concept of place and feeling both of which are defined by borders. The album was produced by Gudasz and Ari Picker.
With opening nods to Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Sister Rosetta Tharpe and June Carter Cash, Gudasz contests social norms on “Truck” with the desire to be open and free. The infectious melody and emboldening refrain exude rich pop sensibilities. Watch “Truck” HERE.
Of the track, Gudasz says, “’Trucks are the best, aren’t they? I believe in everything was a sentiment from Borges I read that I agreed with wholeheartedly as a philosophical stance. Believing in all possibilities.” She continues, “In thinking about genre as in the sense of who you want to be in conversation with, I wanted to name a lot of women I look up to there. Genre as gender performance.”
COUNTRY came to fruition after Gudasz spent significant time reconnecting with her natural surroundings, the ocean being a prominent influence. The entire album is an immersive listening experience featuring vivid and cinematic imagery with finely crafted arrangements.
COUNTRY is the follow up to 2020’s acclaimed sophomore release Cinema, which received a four-star review at MOJO, while Pitchfork said, “The fountaining run of her voice recalls Joni Mitchell, while her classic yet chameleonic songwriting suggests Leonard Cohen…”. The Bitter Southerner referred to her as “…the Joni Mitchell the South never had.”
