Nashville, TN – Today, acclaimed Rounder Records artist Katie Pruitt releases her emotionally raw and gripping new single, “Backseat Driver.” The track is a fiery and vulnerable reflection on control, codependence, and reclaiming your voice after losing it in the noise of someone else’s suppressive love. Written with and produced by Anthony da Costa at Pleasantville Studios in Nashville, TN, “Backseat Driver” blends Pruitt’s trademark sharp lyricism and soulful, exposed delivery with a potent metaphor that hits close to home. The track unfolds like a late-night drive gone wrong — full of tension, silence, and the slow realization that love, when steered by control, leads only to a crash.
“Backseat Driver is about that ex who always gave you bad directions,” says Pruitt of the track. “Sometimes we’re in so deep with someone that we forget to trust our own gut. It’s about listening to everyone’s opinion except your own until you finally take accountability & realize you were in the driver’s seat all along.”
“Backseat Driver” follows the release of Pruitt’s widely acclaimed sophomore album Mantras, and its deluxe edition (Mantras Deluxe), which features guest appearances from SG Goodman and Ruston Kelly. Mantras is Pruitt’s first album in five years and her most personal and revealing work. Her thoughtful and self-reflective songwriting has connected deeply with her passionate fanbase, who pack venues from coast to coast and help foster a communal environment. In addition to the release of “Backseat Driver,” Pruitt recently announced a stripped-back fall acoustic tour, beginning in Decatur, GA on September 4th and wrapping up in Woodstock, NY on October 25th.
