NASHVILLE, TN – Just months after unleashing her critically acclaimed Rounder Records debut Big Mood, Dutch indie artist Judy Blank returns with an unexpected holiday gift: Season’s Beatings, a wry and wonderfully human Christmas EP that trades glossy cheer for something far more honest. Warm amp hiss, fuzzy guitars, and shimmering glockenspiels set the mood for a collection that exposes the chaos instead of covering it up. A bold, guitar-rock take on “Merry Christmas, Baby” channels Judy’s lifelong love for The Beach Boys – that perfect mix of joy, melancholy, and too many harmonies for one room. “Feliz Navidad” turns into a sun-drenched surf jam that reminds us to actually celebrate our neighbors this year. Blank also offers a more morbid take on “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” after discovering an original 1943 lyric that never made it to Hollywood.
“This season kicks the ass of a lot of people,” Blank says. “I hope these songs remind people what kindness, loving thy neighbor, and connection are actually about. Especially when it’s Christmas.”
Season’s Beatings plays like a retro Christmas card filtered through Blank’s singular lens: equal parts wit, vulnerability, and beautifully controlled chaos.
