EXTENSIVE NORTH AMERICAN TOUR RUNNING
JUNE, JULY, OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER
Fruit Bats’ expansive forthcoming full-band album, The Landfill will be arriving on June 12th via Merge Records. Today marks the release of the reflective new track “That Goddamn Sun”.
Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Eric D. Johnson (aka Fruit Bats) offers some insight on how “That Goddamn Sun” came together. “Sometimes words don’t suffice, and a chorus ends up with none of them,” he says. “This “ooooh” melody existed as a voice memo on my phone for a couple of years. It came to me in a large echo-y backstage tiled bathroom somewhere and then languished for a while. The rest of the song was developed during a writing session with my bandmates Kosta Galanopoulos and Josh Mease – we were playing and this old melody just slotted right in there. The lyrics are about something many have written about over the years – the ol’ ‘waiting for the sun to shine’ story.” Listen to “That Goddamn Sun” HERE.
The Landfill was inspired by Johnson’s Midwestern upbringing and those hills that did not rise from natural evolution, yet became a powerful metaphor. The Landfill imagines standing atop a towering pile of history—personal, emotional, and cultural—using that unlikely vantage point to survey what lies ahead. The result is an album concerned with memory, consequence, and possibility, where the debris of the past becomes the foundation from which new visions emerge.
The Landfill was created during a rare prolific period for Johnson following 2025’s intimate Fruit Bats solo outing, Baby Man. Soon after completing that album, he entered a fully collaborative environment in the studio with his longtime touring band. Together they prioritized instinct and chemistry over polish, with few overdubs, no click tracks, and performances captured largely in real time. The Landfill was produced by Johnson, with mixing and additional production by long-time collaborator Thom Monahan.
Fruit Bats will embark on an extensive North American tour in June that runs throughout July, October and November. See full list of dates below or visit FruitBatsMusic.com.
