EXTENSIVE WE’RE ONLY HUMAN FALL TOUR ANNOUNCED
“Like John Prine, Carll has a clever, concise style of communicating serious concepts, frequently through dark humor, displaying world-weary truths underneath wry lyrics.” – American Songwriter
Nashville, TN – Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Hayes Carll has spent his celebrated career masterfully crafting songs that allow us to take a good look at ourselves – the good, the bad and even the absurd – through his character narratives and sage perspectives. On his forthcoming tenth album We’re Only Human (out August 8th on Thirty Tigers), Carll turns the mirror back on himself for the most deeply introspective and reflective work he has created to date.
“The record was inspired by a desire to start listening to my inner voice rather than running from it. The songs are my way of solidifying the lessons I’ve learned, not because I have all the answers, but because I need the reminder that we’re all only human,” says Carll. Throughout We’re Only Human, Carll thoughtfully addresses a wide spectrum of emotions that range from insecurity to inspirational, contemplative to content, regretful to resilient and hopeful to hilarious.
We’re Only Human may be a contemplative and personal album, but it is still a Hayes Carll album brimming with his signature balance of thoughtful lyrics, grit, tenderness and sardonic wit. The latter is overflowing on the first single “Progress Of Man (Bitcoin & Cattle).” The track is a humorous yet sobering commentary on the greed, selfish and narcissistic tendencies that permeate today’s society. The album opens with a beautiful piano melody leading into the title track, which serves as a gentle reminder of our imperfection, and that we need to offer ourselves some grace in this chaotic and demanding world. “Stay Here A While,” co-written with MC Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger, advises us to slow down and live in each moment because they go by quickly. On “What I Will Be,” Carll firmly accepts his authentic self, owning his flaws and celebrating his successes. The album closes with the triumphant, gospel tinged “May I Never,” which is the culmination of all that came before it. The revival-like finale features a cavalcade of friends, including Ray Wylie Hubbard, Shovels & Rope, Darrell Scott, Nicole Atkins, Gordy Quist and Ed Jurdi of Band of Heathens, who each take a verse. It’s a stirring way to end the musical journey that is We’re Only Human.
Hayes Carll has just announced the extensive We’re Only Human Fall Tour in support of the album. Cities include Austin, Dallas, Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Toronto, Detroit, Atlanta, and many more. See list of fall tour dates below.
