“…Gauthier masterfully makes the personal universal.” – Associated Press

“Like [Woody] Guthrie, the 64-year-old Gauthier belongs to a rare pantheon of artists that includes John Prine, Steve Earle, Townes Van Zandt, and Bob Dylan who other musicians refer to as, “songwriter’s songwriters.”  – No Depression

Nashville, TN – Today, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter/author Mary Gauthier releases her most direct and socially-conscious album, Reckoning (Soundly/Thirty Tigers). Reckoning exudes an urgency during turbulent times, while offering inspiration and hope.

Gauthier’s new single “Judgement Day” is a stark and deeply affecting meditation on faith, violence, and moral courage as our society continues down a path into fear, division, and more violence. “After violent killings of protesters by ICE on the frozen streets on Minneapolis, the Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire called for his priests to get affairs in order, which essentially was a call for new Christian martyrs.” Says Gauther. “I wrote this song from the viewpoint of a young priest who heard the call and must decide what to do.” Listen to “Judgement Day” HERE.

Each song on Reckoning serves as a compelling vignette with characters who arrive at pivotal moments and face choices that ultimately define lives, communities, and even history. Based on the press reaction thus far, with much more to come, Reckoning is poised to be Gauthier’s most important work to date and one that stands tall next to her most beloved albums.

“She creates honest, relatable characters, and through their eyes, audiences glean wisdom on universal themes like mercy, trauma, and grief. Her latest rumination reckon or suggest, but never preach, to choose a righteous path.” – No Depression

“This is heady, perceptive writing from Gauthier, from whom we expect nothing less. ‘Reckoning’ may well be her most impactful album to date… – Glide Magazine

“This collection with soul-baring tales is fortified by her expertise. Some songs will have lyrics that not everyone will agree with. But that’s usually the domain of folk artists. Mary keeps it under a calm assemblage without any
radical seasoning” –
 Americana Highways

“This is an important album, about as good as any that Gauthier has recorded, brilliantly produced, undeniably political and yet aspirational too. It’s a wonderful addition to her canon.” – AmericanaUK

The previously released “Soldier of Fortune,” “Alcohol and Adderall,” “Some Times,” and the powerful title track offered an early glimpse into the deep emotional terrain of Reckoning, setting the stage for today’s release.
