Renowned Vocalist Madeleine Peyroux Unveils Poignant New Song “How I Wish,” Reflecting on Racial Atrocities in America Today

Nashville, TN – Acclaimed vocalist, songwriter Madeleine Peyroux has released the moving and contemplative track “How I Wish,” from her upcoming album, Let’s Walk (out June 28th via Thirty Tigers). “How I Wish” serves as an emotional reflection on America’s racial legacy, inspired by tragic events in recent history such as the senseless killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery in early 2020.

It has been well-documented since the beginning of her celebrated career that Peyroux’s influences come from such artists as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Marian Anderson, and so many others. The legacy these legendary figures left behind has taught her and guided her musical journey. “These are my teachers and my heroes,” Peyroux says. “African American music has been the one constant, true path in my life.” However, despite being well-informed about the struggles that these artists, and too many others, have gone through, the horrific events of 2020 shook Peyroux to her core. She began to look inward in an entirely new way and questioned her own blindness as to where America is at today, and how she may have even contributed. She dove into the writings of James Baldwin, bell hooks, W.E.B. Du Bois and others. She watched and listened to lectures and speaking engagements of Dr. Cornel West, all of which contributed heavily to a deep, personal reckoning. The reawakened awareness of her privilege had a profound impact on Peyroux, which is reflected in the highly emotional “How I Wish.” Take a moment to watch the lyric video HERE.

Let’s Walk is Peyroux’s first album in six years and marks her first collection of original material co-written with longtime collaborator Jon Herington. The album represents her most eclectic, introspective, and daring work yet as she bravely addresses personal and societal themes. Let’s Walk weaves together a rich tapestry of jazz, folk, gospel blues, Americana, chamber pop, and Latin rhythms, with a sprinkle of light-hearted humor. Top of Form
