Shovels & Rope Share a Tale of Siblings Raised in a House of Ill Repute on the Pulsating New Track “Piranhanana”

NASHVILLE, TN – Shovels & Rope, the dynamic husband and wife duo of Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent, has released their new track “Piranhanana,” off their forthcoming album Something Is Working Up Above My Head (out September 6th on Dualtone Records).

The driving, minimalist rock song tells the story of a boy who finds some kind of acceptance growing up in a brothel-type environment. Meanwhile, his sister reluctantly copes with her involvement in the business that takes place inside the residence. “’Piranhanana’ is a toothy summer bop that rides you thru a house of mirrors on the shoulders of a boy meditating his way thru some adult scenery while his sister struggles to find her zen,” says Hearst & Trent. Listen to “Piranhanana” HERE.

Something Is Working Up Above My Head is the sixth studio album from the critically acclaimed, award-winning unit from Charleston, SC. Shovels & Rope remain the self-contained, DIY duo, whose character and narrative-driven songwriting and rousing live performances have connected with an adoring fanbase for over a decade. On the new album, they altered their approach and chose to simplify their recording process more than usual by only utilizing instrumentation they can recreate live as a two-piece, their only live configuration. This is in opposition to recording first, then working out the arrangements for the performances. The result of the “less is more” philosophy is an offering that finds Hearst and Trent leaning heavier into the rock and punk roots that have always been foundational to the signature sound of Shovels & Rope.
